If my drive is disconnected, I have plenty of time to contact them and ensure they don't delete the files. Even with other backups I have, having Backblaze (I don't use them, I use Code42) have your files backed up is a great way to go. If for any reason the Backblaze datacenter has not heard from your computer in six months, the backup copy of your data will be removed from the Backblaze datacenter and your account is subject to cancellation. In addition, Backblaze must continue running on your computer to perform self maintenance and maintain the correct mirror copy of your files in the Backblaze datacenter on an ongoing basis. So, please don’t try to upload your external hard drive to us and delete your data off your drive…or we will delete those files from our servers as well. However, Backblaze is not designed as an additional storage system when you run out of space. Just in case, Backblaze will even keep multiple versions of that file for up to 30 days. Thus, we will keep a remote backup of any file that exists on your computer. The Backblaze service is designed to protect the files you care about.

I want a permanent archive of all my data, thank you.

But this isn't a backup-this is selective cloud sharing. My $2/month for (I think) 200 GB Google Drive plan works for files I want to put on the "cloud" so they can be accessed from multiple places. I'll stick to my collection of external WD drives that I rotate off-site every so often. If I have a drive that is silently failing, (or some other non-obvious reason for losing files) I really don't want my backup to silently fail at the same time! In other words, if you delete files on your computer, or the drive fails and you're disconnected from Backblaze's website, Backblaze will see that those files are gone and will remove them from your online account, too. Something else I should mention is that some users have had bad experiences with Backblaze because of a not-so-apparent feature that maybe should be a lot more obvious: Backblaze does not function as a permanent archive of all of your data, but instead as a mirror.

I'm tempted but cautious.įrom an otherwise rave review of BackBlaze: The cost of $5 month for unlimited storage seems like a good deal to me, maybe too good a deal and you know what they say things that sound too good to be true. I've never been a big fan of cloud storage and if I were to use this service, it would be used for supplementary storage only. Has anyone heard of and/or used Backblaze, a cloud data storage provider? They allege their service offers unlimited data and file storage for $5/month or $50/year (paid upfront).
